In memoriam Dr. Gábor BÁLINT

He graduated from the Medical University of Szeged in 1960 and was subsequently invited to the Department of Pharmacology, headed by Prof. Dr. Miklós Jancsó. From 1970 to 1974, at the request of the British Inter-University Council, he worked at the Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine, Makerere University, Uganda, as First Senior Lecturer, and during his stay, he obtained a British Ph.D. degree in 1974.

After his return home, he joined the Department of Internal Medicine in Szeged, first as an Assistant Professor and then as an Associate Professor. As head of the Laboratory of Physiological Research and Clinical Pharmacology, he earned a doctorate at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1987. From 1988 to 1990, he worked as the Head of Department at the Department of Pharmacology at Addis Ababa University (AAU) in Ethiopia. In 1990, he took over the management of all patient care and scientific research laboratories at the then New Clinic in Szeged.

He made many academic and scientific public appearances in the form of congresses, study trips and university lectures. Since 1990-91 he also worked as a WHO expert, mainly in African countries. He continued his work in this field as professor emeritus, and also held special courses on tropical medicine at the University of Szeged for both Hungarian and foreign medical and pharmacy students. As a visiting professor, he regularly held several pharmacy courses at the University of Health Sciences Antigua (UHSA), USA, from 1999-2006.

His scientific publications, university notes, books and book chapters in Hungarian and foreign languages total 380. He was a member and board member of several Hungarian and international scientific societies, e.g. the British Royal Society of Medicine and the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. In 1994, he was a member of the Hungarian Defence Forces unit in Saudi Arabia serving in the Gulf War as a toxicologist, and in 1996 he was the internist and deputy head of the medical service of the Hungarian IFOR unit in Bosnia as a reserve medical officer lieutenant colonel.

His scientific work, teaching, professional and public activities were recognized with several Hungarian and international civil and military awards.
